The Children's Alliance

United Way of Central Carolinas

Homelessness for children isn’t just about where they lay their heads at night; it’s about where their heads are during the day at school, too.  A Child’s Place (ACP) is a local nonprofit working inside Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) to help erase the impact of homelessness on children and their education.  We helped 1,598 children attending 122 different CMS schools during the 2009-10 school year; that’s a great accomplishment but it represents fewer than half of CMS’s identified homeless students.  93% privately funded, ACP is CMS’s only partner dedicated to ensuring that homeless children get the education they need to break the cycle of poverty.  For the 2009-2010 school year, 93% of ACP client children were promoted to the next grade and 93% were reading on grade level, compared to 64% and 48% respectively for homeless children nationally.
